According to the BBC, the Taliban administration has stated that women would no longer be allowed to attend Afghan universities.
The shift, according to a letter from the minister of higher education, is temporary and is planned to go into effect right now.
Women’s access to formal education is further hampered by this as they are already largely barred from secondary schools.
One student at Kabul University told the BBC that she had been sobbing ever since the news broke.
Universities adopted gender-segregated classrooms and entrances where only female students may be taught by female academics or elderly men when the Taliban assumed control of the war-torn nation last year.
According to reports, the most recent actions are expected to raise more worries in the international community.
The Taliban cannot expect to be a genuine member of the international community unless they respect the rights of all Afghans, particularly the human rights and basic freedom of women and girls, stated Robert Wood, US Deputy UN Ambassador, in response to the Taliban’s most recent acts.
After the Taliban took control, the Afghan education system suffered greatly, and after US-led forces left Afghanistan last year, there was a mass flight of professors with advanced degrees.
