US Senator Dismisses Claims of Nigeria Division, Highlights Security Cooperation with Washington
Growing concerns over insecurity and separatist agitations in Nigeria have prompted reactions from international observers, but a United States lawmaker has dismissed claims that Washington is considering any plan to divide the country.
US Senator Riley Moore, speaking during a recent interview, clarified that reports suggesting discussions about Nigeria’s division arose during his visit are unfounded. PulseNets learnt that the senator addressed the speculation directly on Saturday, describing such claims as “false and misleading.”
Moore confirmed that his recent trip to Nigeria involved several high-level meetings with government officials and key stakeholders. He told PulseNets that none of these engagements included conversations about breaking up the country.
Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, the US lawmaker emphasised that “dividing the country has not come up in any serious way” in any of his discussions. He warned that promoting separatist agendas would only exacerbate Nigeria’s fragile security environment, with particularly severe consequences for vulnerable communities.
PulseNets obtained that Moore further explained, “Efforts to embolden separatists hurt Christians in Nigeria, especially in the North and Middle Belt.” He added that ongoing instability would provide terrorist groups operating within and beyond Nigeria a greater opportunity to expand their influence.
“A destabilized Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” Moore stressed, underscoring that the country’s unity is crucial for regional stability across West Africa and the wider African continent.
Reaffirming his humanitarian commitment, Moore told PulseNets, “I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ and for that matter, all Nigerians suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria.”
On bilateral cooperation, PulseNets learnt that the senator highlighted a recent development in US-Nigeria relations, noting, “The US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement,” which he described as a landmark step toward combating insecurity and violent extremism.
