The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has not received the endorsement of Afenifere, according to the group’s acting head Ayo Adebanjo.
Adebanjo criticised Tinubu’s visit to Reuben Fasoranti in a Monday interview with Channels Television.
The former governor of Lagos had visited Fasoranti, one of Afenifere’s founders, at Akure, the capital of Ondo.
Tinubu was seen lowering his head to receive prayers from Fasoranti during the gathering.
This occurred shortly after Adebanjo, another Afenifere founding father, supported Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential nominee.
Due to his advanced age, Fasoranti had transferred control of Afenifere to Adebanjo in March 2021.
“Pa Fasoranti phoned me on Friday that Tinubu had phoned him that he wanted to come and that he wanted to say he should not come.
“But I said, ‘no, don’t do that; you are an elder statesman; if he wants to see you, why not’. I then said it is a sort of conspiracy among people who want to divide Afenifere,” Adebanjo said.
When asked if he consulted Fasoranti before he endorsed Obi, Adebanjo replied: “I don’t have to consult him. He handed over the party to me over a year ago. That’s not the way we do it in the Action Group and he knows it.
“I warned Pa Fasoranti not to allow himself to be put into this mess. I can deal with all of them who were there. They weren’t there when we were doing all these things. But I don’t want any diversion at this time. Afenifere is for Obi, hook, line and sinker.”
