In the first quarter of 2023, power supply in Nigeria witnessed a significant increase, reaching a total of 5,852 gigawatt hours (Gwh), as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its Nigeria Electricity Report for Q1 2023, which was released in Abuja on Wednesday. This marks a notable rise of 241 Gwh compared to the previous quarter’s figure of 5,611 Gwh recorded in Q4 2022.
However, when analyzing the data on a year-on-year basis, the report indicates a decline in electricity supply by 1.74 percent when compared to Q1 2022, during which 5,956 Gwh was reported.

Additionally, the report reveals that the revenue generated by the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in Q1 2023 amounted to N247.33 billion, surpassing the N232.32 billion collected in Q4 2022. On a year-on-year basis, the revenue generated by the DISCOs experienced a notable increase of 20.81 percent compared to the N204.74 billion recorded in Q1 2022.
