2027 Elections: INEC Recognises David Mark as ADC Leader After Supreme Court Ruling
Abuja, April 23, 2026 — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally acknowledged the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under former Senate President, David Mark.
The confirmation was reflected through an update on INEC’s official portal, where the National Executive Committee aligned with Mark is now listed as the legitimate leadership of the party. PulseNets learnt that this digital update effectively settles the question of authority within the party at the regulatory level.
This decision marks a turning point for the ADC, which had been entangled in a prolonged internal dispute involving multiple factions laying claim to its leadership. PulseNets reported that the crisis had threatened the party’s cohesion and electoral readiness.
The recognition follows the ADC’s national convention held in Abuja, an event that PulseNets obtained details on, noting it proceeded despite reported attempts to obstruct it through legal and administrative means.
At the convention, Senator Mark emerged as National Chairman and is now officially reflected on INEC’s platform alongside other members of the party’s National Working Committee.
Strategic Importance of INEC Recognition
The regulatory validation by INEC provides the Mark-led ADC with full legal standing to:
- Contest upcoming elections as a unified political entity
- Nominate and sponsor candidates for the 2027 general elections
- Access statutory campaign financing and electoral benefits
- Conduct political activities without institutional or legal constraints
PulseNets learnt that this development significantly strengthens the ADC’s position within Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape.
The move is being interpreted as a major gain for a broader opposition alignment reportedly involving prominent figures such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, all of whom have been linked to the ADC platform.
Reactions Trail INEC Decision
Reacting to the development, Senator Mark described the recognition as “a victory for democracy and internal party democracy.”
In a statement obtained by PulseNets, the ADC National Secretariat noted that the party is now more cohesive and positioned to present a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next electoral cycle.

However, dissent persists. PulseNets reported that a rival faction within the ADC has indicated plans to challenge INEC’s decision in court, arguing that the recognition was both premature and biased.
This unfolding situation is expected to accelerate political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition blocs intensify efforts to consolidate platforms capable of mounting a serious challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ambition.
