Deadly Clash Between Police and Shiites at Wuse Market

On Sunday, a deadly clash erupted between police officers and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as ‘Shiites,’ at the bustling Wuse Market. The violent confrontation led to the tragic death of a trader and two police officers.

According to PulseNets, the Shiite group was conducting an Arbaeen procession to mark the 40th day after the Ashura anniversary when the situation took a violent turn. The police, in an attempt to disperse the procession, fired teargas and live ammunition. Unfortunately, a trader named Amiru was struck in the chest by a stray bullet. Despite being rushed to Zone 3 Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

The situation escalated further as members of the Shiite group and some traders retaliated, hurling stones at the police and setting three police vehicles on fire.

PulseNets also reported the response from the Abuja police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, who confirmed the deaths of two police officers during the incident. She stated, “The FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shiite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by traffic light, where two police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three police patrol vehicles set ablaze.”
