50% telecom tariff hike: POS operators to hike charges

The Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN)  aka POS operators has hinted that its members might be compelled to raise service charges.

Ogungbayi Ganiyu, the National Public Relations Officer of AMMBAN, spoke to PulseNets on Monday regarding the matter.

His remarks came in response to the Federal Government’s approval of a 50 percent increase in telecommunications services tariffs.

Reacting to the development, Ganiyu told PulseNets that AMMBAN members’ operations heavily rely on telecom services, particularly data, making them highly susceptible to the impact of the hike.

He also mentioned that POS operators might consider absorbing the cost of the increased telecom tariff.

“The telecom tariff hike will impact the operations of our members. I am afraid this may also have a multiplier effect on service charges,” he said.

“We have not sat down and looked at the latest tariff hike,” Ganiyu added.

PulseNets reported that the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers on Monday vowed to challenge the federal government in court over the 50 percent telecoms tariff hike.

It is worth recalling that the previous increment in telecom tariffs occurred in 2013.
