A tragic accident occurred on Saturday night in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, when a trailer lost control and collided with three mini-buses, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people.
The incident happened around 7 pm at the Imo State University junction.
Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy-duty truck was driving against traffic when the driver lost control, hitting approximately 20 people in total.
The trailer crashed into three mini-buses, each carrying nine passengers including the drivers, leading to the catastrophic outcome.
Emeka, an eyewitness at the scene, recounted that the mini-buses were hit in quick succession because they were travelling close to one another.
He said the severity of the collision caused significant casualties, with seven victims confirmed dead and their bodies transported to the morgue. Other injured individuals were rushed to the Federal University of Technology Hospital Owerri (FUTHO) for emergency treatment.
The accident caused major gridlock on the busy Okigwe Road as onlookers and relatives of the victims flocked to the scene and the hospital, seeking information about their loved ones.

An X user, Zinny wrote: ”A trailer belonging to Dangote just rammed into and crashed 20 buses and hordes of students at IMSU junction, Owerri.
”A bunch of year one Imo State University students coming from a late exam and trying to go home just lost their lives (20 at this time).”
