The most senior career leaders in each of the state’s local governments and local council development zones are to oversee the operations of their respective councils, according to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
This information was released in a statement by Olawale Rasheed, his spokesperson, and was obtained by PulseNets on Monday in Osogbo.
According to the statement, Adeleke insisted that the removal of the ostensibly elected local government Chairmen and Councilors was done in accordance with the ruling of the Federal High Court located in Osogbo.
Additionally, the statement’s mandate has immediate effect.
The Osun local government election was declared invalid by Justice Ayo Nathaniel Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Osogbo, on Friday, November 25, 2022, according to PulseNets.
The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), chaired by Segun Oladitan, conducted the local government election on Saturday, October 15, 2022.
Justice Emmanuel had concluded that the local government election was not carried out in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2022, and that the election was therefore unconstitutional, null, and invalid.
He also mandated the immediate eviction of the newly sworn-in local government chairmen and councillors from their offices and secretariats.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been at odds over the Osun Local Government election ever since the State government under Adegboyega Oyetola set the election for Saturday, October 15, 2022.
When OSIEC and its Chairman were in opposition, the Osun PDP filed a lawsuit against them, claiming that the local government election was invalid and in violation of the Electoral Act of 2022.
The Osun State House of Assembly had authorised OSIEC to proceed with the LG election.
The OSIEC law 2022, which was signed into law by the outgoing governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, was also approved by the Osun House of Assembly.
One political party, the APC, campaigned for every post available in the Osun local government election, which was boycotted by the Peoples Democratic Party and other parties. The ballot used a “Yes” or “No” system.
