400,000 NNPP Members Defect To PDP In Adamawa
In Adamawa State, thousands of members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have switched to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
On Friday, several former NNPP members were spotted walking around Yola, the state capital, wearing the Kwakwassiya hats that the NNPP’s national head, Rabiu Kwankwaso, popularised.
However, they were screaming PDP chants and expressing their support for Atiku Abubakar, a PDP presidential candidate, and Ahmadu Fintiri, a PDP candidate for governor of Adamawa State.
They were leaving the NNPP, according to the crowd’s leader, Dr. Babayo Liman, a former Northeast zonal secretary, since the party was experiencing problems in several states and the national leader, who is also running for president, had been unable to fix them.
Babayo, a resident of Bauchi State, made his defection public earlier this week and said that his followers in Adamawa had welcomed him to lead them into the PDP.
“I have been receiving invitations from various states and when I got here (Adamawa), they told me they wished to follow my footsteps,” he said, stating that no less than 400,000 people were leaving the NNPP to PDP in Adamawa State.
He identified those who followed him as former NNPP officials from the state’s 21 local government areas (LGAs) at the news conference that took place at the NUJ Press Centre in Yola.
The former NNPP members symbolically left the organisation by taking off their Kwankwsssiya hats during the news conference.
