US Imposes $80 Customs Fee on Shipments From Nigeria, NIPOST Confirms

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has officially confirmed that the United States government has introduced a ₦123,000 ($80) customs fee on all shipments entering America from Nigeria and other countries.

PulseNets learnt on Friday that this development was disclosed in an official circular made available to DAILY POST by NIPOST. According to the agency, the measure stems from an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump, which suspends duty-free treatment under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

NIPOST explained that the directive affects every country and applies to all postal operators and international postal administrations.

In a notice obtained by PulseNets, NIPOST stated:

“The Nigerian Postal Service wishes to inform our esteemed customers that the Government of the United States has enacted a new policy through an Executive Order suspending duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries under the IEEPA framework.

This decision mandates that all postal inflows into the United States, not only those from Nigeria, must pay an additional customs charge.”

$80 Fee To Be Paid in Nigeria

From August 29, 2025, every postal item bound for the US — except letters and documents — will now attract a prepaid customs duty of $80, payable in naira at the point of acceptance in Nigeria.

“All items, apart from letters and documents, will attract a mandatory prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (or its naira equivalent) before dispatch. Furthermore, shipments will undergo mandatory customs checks upon arrival in the United States,” NIPOST clarified.

Trade Tensions Intensify

PulseNets reported that in the past week, President Trump had raised tariffs on multiple countries, including Nigeria, in what analysts describe as part of a wider trade enforcement policy. The Nigerian government, however, has vowed to retaliate if the new tariff regime disrupts bilateral trade and postal cooperation.

NIPOST also emphasized that the Executive Order is not Nigeria-specific. Instead, it is a global measure that affects all postal administrations and customers worldwide.

“The policy affects every country’s inflows to the US, not just Nigeria. It is a universal directive under the IEEPA,” the postal agency told PulseNets.

With this policy now in force, businesses and individuals relying on postal shipments to the US will face significantly higher costs, further tightening the already strained trade relations between Washington and Abuja.
