Sowore, Others Stage #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja as Police Beef Up Security

A fresh wave of protests has erupted in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, alongside other supporters, took to the streets to demand the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The protest, which began early Saturday morning, saw demonstrators carrying banners and placards with inscriptions such as “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now,” and “Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied.”

Sowore, addressing journalists at the protest ground, said the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu despite several court rulings ordering his release is a violation of human rights and an affront to Nigeria’s democracy.

“We are here to demand justice. The courts have spoken, and it is time for the government to obey its own laws. This is not just about Kanu — it’s about the rule of law in our country,” Sowore stated.

Meanwhile, there was a noticeable increase in police presence across major areas of the city, including the Unity Fountain and Federal Secretariat, as security agencies moved to prevent any possible breakdown of order.

A senior police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the deployment was a precautionary measure to ensure the protest remained peaceful and did not disrupt public activities.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign continues to gain momentum both online and offline, with activists and sympathizers urging the Federal Government to comply with court orders and release the IPOB leader unconditionally.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021, facing multiple charges related to treasonable felony and incitement.
