#FreeNnamdiKanuNow: Sowore Alleges Move to Remand Nnamdi Kanu’s Brother, Lawyer, Others in Kuje Prison After Arrest During Protest
Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has raised alarm over an alleged move by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to have Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, and 11 others remanded in Kuje Prison following their arrest during Friday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
Sowore made the claim in a post on his official Facebook page on Saturday morning, stating that instead of releasing the detained protesters as expected, security operatives have taken them to the Kuje Magistrate Court with the aim of securing a remand order.
“I just learned that illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun has sent Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and 11 others all the way to Kuje Magistrate Court to get them remanded in prison at all costs,” Sowore wrote.
The detainees were reportedly arrested yesterday during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, which turned tense after security operatives fired live bullets and tear gas to disperse demonstrators demanding the immediate release of the detained IPOB leader.
According to earlier reports, family members and colleagues of those arrested had expected them to regain freedom today, making Sowore’s revelation even more alarming.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement regarding the status of the detained individuals or Sowore’s allegations.
