Accord Party Disowns Factional Suspension, Reaffirms Maxwell Mgbudem as Authentic National Chairman

The National Working Committee of the Accord Party has pushed back strongly against claims circulated by a splinter group announcing the suspension of its National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem. In a swift reaction, the party described the move as an unserious political stunt engineered by individuals seeking to create unrest ahead of the 2027 general election.

The rebuttal, obtained by PulseNets from National Publicity Secretary Joseph Omorogbe, dismissed the announcement made at a stakeholders’ gathering in Keffi, Nasarawa State, insisting it was coordinated by former presidential candidate Chris Imumolen, whom the party maintains has long been expelled.

Omorogbe, who spoke to PulseNets, said the so-called vote of no confidence was nothing more than a desperate attempt to mislead Nigerians. According to him, the plot was driven by a hunger for relevance rather than any genuine concern for the Accord Party.

He emphasised in a clarified statement that “Maxwell Mgbudem remains the duly recognised National Chairman of Accord, acknowledged by INEC and reflected on the Commission’s official platform.”

Reaffirming the party’s unity, Omorogbe added that “members of Accord are united in purpose and will not be swayed by the antics of expelled individuals or their political sponsors whose sole intention is to destabilise the party before 2027.”

He further stressed that “under Mgbudem’s leadership, Accord has been reorganised and repositioned as a strong progressive mass movement committed to building a better, greater and more prosperous democratic nation.”

The controversy escalated less than 24 hours after a faction claiming to represent state chairmen from the 36 states met in Keffi, announcing Mgbudem’s suspension over alleged anti-party activities and declaring Imumolen as the new national chairman.

But the mainstream leadership, PulseNets learnt, cited an existing Federal High Court judgment and accused the faction of aligning with external political interests around the Anambra governorship election—allegations the recognised leadership has dismissed as fabricated and politically motivated.
