The Labour Party (LP) has formally acknowledged Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader, while also extending goodwill to its former presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, following his decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), PulseNets learnt.

The development was contained in an official communiqué issued by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, and obtained by PulseNets on Thursday.

According to the document, the resolutions were adopted at a meeting of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday, where key issues bordering on party cohesion, expansion, and long-term political strategy were extensively deliberated.

In the communiqué, the party declared:

“The National Working Committee, acting unanimously, hereby affirms its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party.”

The NWC also conveyed its message to Peter Obi, noting his recent political realignment.

“The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, success in his future political pursuits and in his new political platform,” the statement added.

PulseNets further learnt that the party has officially recognized former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman.

The Labour Party reiterated its commitment to the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which, according to the party, affirmed that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had elapsed.

Consequently, the party called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately accord Nenadi Usman and National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha all constitutional rights, recognitions, and privileges arising from the apex court’s ruling.

“The National Working Committee reiterates that all congresses and the National Convention of the Labour Party shall be conducted strictly in line with the provisions of the Party Constitution.”

Party members across all levels were also encouraged to fully engage in the forthcoming congresses, which the leadership described as critical to strengthening internal democracy.
