Seun Kuti Fumes at Wizkid FC: It Is an Insult to Call Wizkid the “New Fela”
Seun Kuti, Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician and son of the late legendary pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has described it as deeply disrespectful to label Afrobeats star Wizkid as a modern-day version of his father.
Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream monitored by PulseNets, Kuti cautioned fans of the Ojuelegba crooner, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to desist from drawing parallels between contemporary Afrobeats stars and the late Afrobeat icon.
According to Kuti, any attempt to equate Wizkid or other new-generation artists with Fela diminishes the historical, cultural, and political weight of his father’s legacy. PulseNets learnt that his remarks were prompted by renewed online debates and comparisons involving Wizkid and Fela.
“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You keep insisting that your so-called artiste is the new Fela. When it became obvious that the shoes were far too big to fill, and people like me refused to let those insults slide, you started acting confused. Comparing Wizkid to Fela is an insult, plain and simple,” Kuti said.
He further accused sections of Wizkid’s fanbase of lacking basic understanding of Afrobeat history, stressing that their actions stem from ignorance rather than any form of conscious rebellion.
“You people have no respect, and normally I can respect disrespect when it comes from a place of defiance. But this one is not defiance; it is ignorance. That is the problem,” he added.
PulseNets obtained that Kuti also criticised the recurring tendency of Wizkid fans to invoke Fela’s name during online arguments, noting that such behaviour has had broader consequences for Nigeria’s music industry.
“Once again, Wizkid fans are online dragging Fela into their petty fights. Why must Fela always be part of your small discussions? This kind of overzealous fandom has damaged the industry. Some artists cannot even work together anymore because of toxic fan rivalries,” he stated.
In one of his strongest remarks, Kuti described Wizkid FC as one of the most uninformed fan communities globally, urging them to focus solely on appreciating their preferred artist’s work without constant comparisons.

“I honestly think Wizkid FC is the most ignorant fanbase in the world. You need to behave yourselves and focus on your artist. Can you not enjoy the music on its own? The reason you keep comparing it to something else is simple: the music does not satisfy your spirit. You may act like you enjoy it, but spiritually, you are empty,” he told PulseNets.
The comments have since sparked fresh debate across social media, reigniting long-standing conversations around generational differences, legacy, and respect within Nigeria’s evolving music landscape.
