Angela Okorie Remanded in Suleja Prison Over Alleged Defamation of Mercy Johnson

Popular Nigerian actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre following allegations of defamation involving fellow Nollywood star Mercy Johnson, PulseNets learnt.

The remand order was issued by an Abuja court on Wednesday, shortly after Okorie was taken into custody by security operatives, information obtained by PulseNets indicates.

Reacting to the development, Nollywood filmmaker Stanley Ontop publicly criticised the action, questioning the speed of the judicial process and accusing Mercy Johnson of using intimidation rather than due legal channels.

Stanley, who spoke via his Instagram page, insisted that defamation remains a civil matter and should be treated as such under Nigerian law.

“Free Angela Okorie now, regardless of who is involved,” he wrote. “If you feel someone has defamed you, approach a competent court and sue the person. Defamation is a civil case. When will the Nigerian police finally learn to do their job properly?”

He further expressed disbelief at how swiftly the case progressed, while emotionally assuring his colleague of continued support.

“So the judiciary can work this fast? How will you sleep tonight knowing that your colleague is in prison? Angela, I will never abandon you,” he added.

PulseNets reported that Angela Okorie was arrested in Lagos late Tuesday night and subsequently flown to Abuja early Wednesday morning, where she was presented before the court.
