Mohammed Bello El-Rufai Dumps APC for ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has formally dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development marks another major political shift within Kaduna State as alignments and defections continue to reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The son of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, confirmed his resignation from the APC in a statement released on Thursday after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced his resignation letter during plenary, PulseNets learnt.

The federal lawmaker also disclosed plans to seek re-election to the House of Representatives under the ADC platform.

“A few hours ago, the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, announced my letter of resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and my formal move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at plenary,” Bello stated.

“I am now a member of the ADC, and I will be seeking re-election to continue representing the good people of Kaduna North Federal Constituency on this platform.”

Political observers believe the defection could further intensify political recalculations in Kaduna State, where several camps have continued to reposition ahead of the 2027 elections, PulseNets reported.

Bello further revealed that two other Kaduna lawmakers also joined the ADC alongside him. They include Suleiman Richifa, representing Soba Federal Constituency, and Umar Ajilo, representing Makarfi/Kudan Federal Constituency.

According to the lawmaker, the defections signal the emergence of a new political movement centred on grassroots participation and people-oriented governance.

“I am joined in this new chapter by our respected elder, Hon. Engr. Suleiman Richifa, representing Soba, and my dear brother, Hon. Umar Ajilo, representing Makarfi/Kudan, who both defected from their previous parties to the African Democratic Congress,” he said.

“Together, we are building a home for progressive, people-focused service.”

Bello described his exit from the APC as a decision rooted in principle, courage and commitment to effective representation.

“This decision was not taken lightly. As a proud son of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, I am guided by courage, conviction, and the unshakable belief that our people deserve the very best,” he stated.

“To the people of Kaduna North: our work continues, and it will not stop. We will never compromise on delivering quality representation. There is still so much to do.”

As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State leadership of the APC had yet to officially react to Bello’s resignation and defection to the ADC, PulseNets learnt.
