Senate Presidency: I supported Akpabio because he gave me N200m for election — Wike

Former Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has revealed the reason behind his support for Senator Godswill Akpabio’s bid to become the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.

Wike stated that Akpabio had donated N200 million to his campaign during the 2014 and 2015 elections. He emphasized the principle of reciprocity, stating that one good deed deserves another.

Speaking at a special Thanksgiving service organized by his family at St. Peters Deanery in Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor area of the state, on Sunday, Wike acknowledged Akpabio’s unwavering support for his governorship ambition in 2015, despite facing criticism.

Wike explained, “When I was running in 2014 and 2015, he came out and supported me. He gave me N200 million for that election. That is why I said one good turn deserves another. I supported him this time, and I thank God he emerged victorious.”

In response, Akpabio clarified that the N200 million he provided to Wike in 2015 did not come from the treasury of Akwa Ibom State, where he was serving as governor at the time. He claimed that the funds were sourced from his personal savings accrued during his tenure as a managing director in the telecommunications sector prior to becoming governor.
