Growing Opposition Threatens Senate President Akpabio’s Leadership, Impeachment Calls Intensify

Ex-Niger Delta Agitators Rejects Senate President Godswill Akpabio's Impeachment Plan

In recent weeks, the ranks of senators opposing Senate President Godswill Akpabio have reportedly swelled, with many now advocating for his impeachment. The root of this opposition lies in Akpabio’s alleged unilateral appointments of the Senate minority leader and minority whip, perceived as a power grab.

Senators Abba Moro and Osita Ngwu’s appointments to these positions were met with widespread criticism, accusing Akpabio of sidestepping proper procedures. The move sparked a heated exchange on the Senate floor, with accusations that Akpabio’s actions were undermining established protocols.

Sources suggest that the number of senators opposing Akpabio has significantly increased since the altercation. Reports indicate that a signature drive is underway to gather support for his impeachment, with rumors suggesting financial incentives of up to $2,000 for each signing senator.

The contentious appointments have not only deepened the divide among opposition lawmakers but also strained the unity among South-East senators. Concerns are raised about Akpabio’s reliance on signatures rather than a joint decision of the opposition parties and senators, setting what some consider a dangerous precedent.

“The emergence of Ngwu has only thrown up the undue rivalry we used to witness among South-East senators, especially what gave the South-East a bad name in the 4th and 5th Senate,” said a source, highlighting concerns over the disruption of established norms.

The reliance on signatures to determine candidates for key positions has prompted opposition senators to initiate their signature drive, further complicating the political landscape. Critics argue that this approach deviates from established political party procedures and could have broader implications for Senate practices.

Despite the growing opposition, Akpabio remains confident in his leadership, relying on the support of ranking senators and leveraging regional divisions. The North/South divide in the appointment of the Senate president has provided him with additional support from the North. However, sources close to lawmakers emphasize that Akpabio’s political future hinges on his ability to navigate and manage the intensifying opposition. If discontent continues to mount, senators may reconsider established zoning arrangements in favor of a leader who they believe can safeguard their collective interests.
