Amnesty International calls for probe after Tinubu orders release of detained minors

Amnesty International has called for an investigation into the circumstances leading to the detention of minors arrested for protesting in Kano state.

The international non-governmental organization made the call while reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s order for the release of the minors.

A statement posted on X by the organisation read: “Amnesty International welcomes the Nigeria president’s order for the release of the minors detained for over 93 in a notorious police facility in Abuja, for participating in peaceful protest.

“President Bola Tinubu must also order a transparent investigation of the alleged deliberate starvation of the minors as a result of detention in a deplorable condition, with deprivation of food and other basic needs, that put their physical and mental health at grave danger.

“The ill-treatments the minors were subjected to – solely for exercising the right to peaceful protest – exposes a deliberate strategy to crush the vibrant spirit of the country’s youth and stop them from demanding accountability, freedom and human rights.”
