Bayelsa Governor Attends UNGA in New York, Set to Deliver Keynote on Gulf of Guinea

New York — Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has joined world leaders, top diplomats, policymakers, global lending institutions, and business executives in New York for the 2025 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

On Tuesday evening, Governor Diri  had on the side attended a special event tagged “Ghana Reset”, hosted by the President of Ghana, His Excellency Dr. John Mahama. The programme focused on charting new and innovative financing models for Ghana’s health sector.

The high-profile gathering featured several global leaders, including the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, Nigeria’s former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, among others.

As part of his itinerary at the UNGA, Governor Diri announced that he will on Thursday deliver a keynote address at the High-Level Roundtable on the Gulf of Guinea.

Highlighting the importance of the event, the Bayelsa Governor noted that the Gulf of Guinea remains a strategic frontier for economic advancement. He emphasized that Bayelsa State, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on three flanks, is well-positioned to harness its vast maritime resources.

“This is an event that is significant to Bayelsa State’s growth and economic advancement. Our administration will continue to explore the appropriate opportunities for our state’s economic growth, development, and prosperity,” Governor Diri said.
