Udengs Eradiri, the Labour Party gubernatorial candidate for Bayelsa State, has unveiled his PEAP agenda, outlining his plans to transform the state and fulfill its potential as the “Glory of All Lands.” Recognizing the untapped resources and blessings bestowed upon Bayelsa, Udengs aims to address the current state of poverty, underdevelopment, and infrastructure deficit through purposeful and innovative leadership.
The PEAP agenda, an acronym for People, Education, Agriculture, and Power, encompasses key areas that Udengs intends to focus on to drive progress and prosperity in Bayelsa State.
Under the People pillar, Udengs emphasizes the importance of job creation and economic stimulation through close engagement with the people. Healthcare will be a priority, with improved medical facilities, equipment, and training for health workers. Efforts will also be made to provide decent, affordable housing and accommodation, develop alternative cities, and ensure water and sanitation services are in line with health and environmental standards.
In terms of security, Udengs recognizes its significance in ensuring the well-being of the people. A comprehensive strategy will be implemented, including collaboration with security agencies, community executives, and the introduction of Bayelsa coastal guards to combat crimes related to the state’s waterways. Surveillance technology, training programs, and investments in security infrastructure will also be prioritized.
The Education aspect of the agenda focuses on digital education, skills acquisition, and ICT capacity building. Udengs aims to provide quality and functional free education, with a focus on rural areas. Teachers’ training, educational materials, and facilities will be upgraded, while scholarships will be offered for professional skills in fields such as medicine, engineering, and ICT. Tech villages and ICT hubs will be established to nurture the skills of young Bayelsans, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation.
Agriculture, another pillar of the PEAP agenda, seeks to promote self-sufficiency and stimulate the economy. Udengs plans to harness Bayelsa’s fertile soil and climate to cultivate cash crops and food crops.
Different agricultural clusters will be created across the state to leverage comparative advantages and ensure large-scale production. Investments will be made in aquatic resources, agro-allied processing, and manufacturing to further boost the agricultural sector.
In the Power sector, Udengs acknowledges the importance of electricity in driving economic growth and improving living standards. The recently enacted Electricity Act empowers the state to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity.
Udengs intends to invest strategically in electricity, leveraging the abundant gas and water resources to provide clean and uninterrupted power supply. Gas turbines will be procured for uninterrupted power in the three senatorial districts, and efforts will be made to attract industries to an industrial/production area powered by gas.
Udengs also plans to embark on massive infrastructural development, constructing flyovers, roads, and leisure parks, and implementing the Yenagoa master plan. To enhance revenue generation, moribund state-owned companies such as Bayelsa Construction Company, Bayelsa Oil Company, and Bayelsa Fisheries will be revived, creating jobs and stimulating the economy.
