The President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Dcn Peter Igbifa, was impeached on Sunday by the 5th Mobile Parliament during a plenary session in Otuagabi, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
The impeachment followed a motion by Ellington Bakumor (Obotebe) for “Parliament to impeach Igbifa on the grounds of divide and rule, abuse of power, misappropriation of funds, disrespect and undermining of legislative powers and executive rascality”, which was seconded by Vincent Kingdom (Olodioma).
The motion was passed by a unanimous vote of the members of the parliament. Speaker of the Parliament, Bob Collins Igetei, subsequently announced Igbifa’s impeachment.
The parliament also ordered for Igbifa’s deputy, Saviour Olali, to act as President of the council and call for a national convention in no more than 72 hours.
The impeachment of Igbifa is a significant development in the IYC, as it is the first time that a president of the council has been impeached. The reasons for the impeachment are serious, and they raise questions about Igbifa’s leadership of the council.
