BREAKING: N500M Bail Granted to Abubakar Malami, Wife, and Son Ahead of Money Laundering Trial

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, to bail of N500 million, PulseNets learnt, pending trial on money laundering charges filed by the federal government.

PulseNets obtained that the bail requires Malami to provide two sureties each ready to stand for him in the same sum. The court specified that the sureties must own landed properties in Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa, with documents to be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar, while the sureties depose to affidavits of means.

Malami is also to deposit his travel documents with the court and is barred from leaving the country without express court permission. In addition, both he and his sureties must submit two recent passport photographs to the court, PulseNets reported.

The former AGF will remain in Kuje Prison until he fulfills the bail conditions. Friends, associates, and sympathizers of Malami have reportedly mobilized to secure his release, PulseNets learnt.

Justice Nwite fixed February 17 for the commencement of the trial. The same bail conditions apply to Malami’s son, Abdulaziz, and Hajia Asabe Bashir, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed a 16-count charge of money laundering against Malami, his son, and his wife, PulseNets spoke to sources familiar with the matter.
