UK Government Announces Partnership with Ohanaeze Ndigbo for South-East Development

In a significant development, the British Government has revealed its intention to collaborate with Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide in fostering growth and development in the South-East region of Nigeria. Dr Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, made this announcement during his visit to the headquarters of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Enugu on Tuesday.

Dr Montgomery highlighted the existing long-term development partnership between the United Kingdom and Enugu State, focusing on crucial areas such as health, education, and the economy. He expressed a commitment to further enhance this relationship in order to uplift the South-East region as a whole.

Recognizing the challenges and opportunities in the region, the high commissioner affirmed the UK’s readiness to assist in various aspects, including education, agriculture, industrial development, power, and seaport infrastructure. These areas were presented by Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, during the meeting.

Dr Montgomery stated, “We will explore these issues and determine how we can contribute. We are interested in the Business Council proposed by President-General Iwuanyanwu, as well as agricultural services and industries. Our focus is on boosting trade, increasing investment incentives, and creating opportunities between Nigeria and the UK.”

Expressing admiration for the South-East region’s dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit, the British High Commissioner pledged to collaborate closely with Ohanaeze Ndigbo to promote economic prosperity for the people of the region.

Responding to the announcement, President-General Iwuanyanwu expressed gratitude to the British High Commissioner for his visit and acknowledged the immense challenges faced in his role. He outlined the key areas of education, agriculture, industrial development, infrastructure, transportation, and electricity as priorities for stimulating economic growth in the South-East.

President-General Iwuanyanwu emphasized the importance of support from the British Government and the British Chamber of Commerce in realizing these objectives. He also emphasized the need for strong business relationships between Chambers of Commerce in Igboland and the United Kingdom.
