Burkina Faso experiences a second coup in eight months

Another coup has occurred in Burkina Faso, marking the second in the country’s eight-month history.

Friday night, Captain Ibrahim Traore made the announcement that Paul Henri Damiba, the military chief, had been overthrown by the army.

President Roch Kabore was deposed in January by Damiba and other mutineers.

Traore informed the populace in a statement that the military had assisted Damiba in deciding he was no longer able to maintain the nation’s security.

Burkina Faso is battling an escalating conflict that has left people dead and displaced in the worst-affected districts.

“Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question”, said the new leader.

The national assembly’s dissolution and the closing of borders were declared by Traore. Additionally, there is a curfew in effect from 9 pm to 5 am.

Damiba had just arrived home after attending the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
