Burna Boy Makes BET Hip-Hop Awards History with 7 Nominations

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, better known by his stage name Burna Boy, has been nominated for seven awards at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

PulseNets reports that this includes a nomination for Artist of the Year, making him the first African to be nominated in this category.

The other nominations for Burna Boy are:

  • Song of the Year: “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” ft. 21 Savage
  • Best Hip-Hop Video: “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” ft. 21 Savage
  • Best Collaboration: “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” ft. 21 Savage
  • Best Live Performer
  • Lyricist of the Year
  • Hustler of the Year

Burna Boy is tied with DJ Khaled for the third most nominations at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards, behind Drake (9) and Cardi B and 21 Savage (12).

The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards will tape in Atlanta on October 3 and will premiere on BET one week later on October 10.

In the Best International Flow category, Ghanaian rapper Black Sherif, Zambian rapper Sampa The Great, and South African rappers K.O and AKA have been nominated. This is the first time since the creation of this category in 2019 that no Nigerian rapper has been nominated.
