The Niger Delta Youth Parliament (NDYP), led by the Honorable Speaker, Rt. Hon. Daniel Ifon, has criticised the Federal Government for turning a deaf ear to citizens who want the Eleme axis of the East-West road, which has been described by a number of people as a dead trap, to be rehabilitated.

The youth organisation strongly denounced the neglect of fixing the road in a statement issued by the chairman, House Committee on Works, Hon. kenkwo K. kensaandu and duly signed by the speaker.

According to information obtained by PulseNets, the member representing the Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo federal constituency, Hon. Caleb Akara Osaro, had brought up this issue on several occasions, citing traffic accidents that had claimed lives and damaged property.

The statement reads;

Niger Delta Youths are pained that the Federal Government through the Ministry Of Works have continued to pay deaf ears to the constant yearnings and cries of Well meaning Niger Deltans, Road Users, and inhabitants of the Eleme Axis of the East/West Road. This road has become a death trap and has claimed many lives in recent times. If you recall, that on 6th October, 2022 we recorded an incident of a Trailer who fell and caused serious accident on that road killing 8 commuters, and again today 14th October, 2022 we have seen another occurrence of another trailer Loaded with 40ft Container has collapsed on the Aleto Bridge, knocking down two vehicles into the River. 4 casualties have been identified and the state of others still uncertain.
The East/West Road is not just an access that links other states within the Niger Delta Region, but the area houses and link to Important National Assets and companies such as the Eleme Petrol Chemical company, Nigerian Refinery, Onne Seaports, and over 300 Companies that employ Labour in this Country.

If within 7 Working days contractors are not Mobilized to site, Niger Delta Youths will be left with no choice than to pulse Activities on the Road until the needful is done.
