ECOWAS Declares State of Emergency Amid Rising Coups and Political Instability

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a state of emergency across its member countries, citing mounting political instability driven by recent coups and attempted mutinies.

The declaration was made on Tuesday by the president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja. PulseNets learnt that the session brought together ministers and security chiefs to deliberate on the worsening political and security landscape in the sub-region.

Touray told delegates that the extraordinary measure was necessary as the region faces “unprecedented security and political threats,” stressing that immediate collective action is essential to protect democracy and ensure stability.

He added, “The situation requires a coordinated and urgent response. Our region is confronting a disturbing resurgence of coups and attempted mutinies that challenge our collective commitment to constitutional order.”

According to sources obtained by PulseNets, the emergency declaration coincides with rising anxiety over military takeovers, political tensions, and deteriorating security conditions in several West African nations.

ECOWAS ministers and security chiefs spoke to PulseNets about ongoing efforts to assess the situation and identify strategies to reinforce regional cooperation. Touray highlighted that the bloc remains determined to restore stability through diplomatic engagement, targeted sanctions where necessary, and bolstering regional security mechanisms.
