Heads of state and government from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met on Sunday in Abuja, where they pledged to step up efforts in key areas like counterterrorism, regional security, and democratic governance.

Top of the agenda was the need to address terrorism threats plaguing the region. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating this scourge and instructed the ECOWAS Commission to expedite plans for deploying a regional counterterrorism force. The summit also called for increased funding for joint maritime operations and closer collaboration among member states on security matters.

In response to recent political turmoil, the summit condemned the military takeover in Niger and urged the junta to immediately release President Mohammed Bazoum and restore constitutional order.
