FAAC Allocation: Bayelsa Development downbeat, Goodluck Jonathan only achievement since 1996

In a recent Twitter post, Akin Akinwale (@mrlurvy) has expressed his dissatisfaction with the underdevelopment in Bayelsa State despite receiving one of the highest FAAC allocation among all the states while shedding light on the disparities in the disbursement of funds from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in the first half of 2023.

The allocations reveal significant differences among states in Nigeria, with some receiving substantially higher disbursements compared to others.

Highest Recipients: Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, and Bayelsa

During the first half of 2023, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, and Bayelsa states emerged as the top beneficiaries of FAAC disbursements. These states received the highest allocations, indicating a significant flow of funds into their coffers. The reasons for their increased allocations were not specified in the tweet.

Lowest Allocation: Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Gombe, and Taraba States

Conversely, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Gombe, and Taraba states received the lowest allocations during the same period. These states have struggled with comparatively lower disbursements, raising questions about the factors influencing the distribution of funds among Nigerian states.

Development Disparities Among States

Akin Akinwale’s tweet also drew attention to the varying levels of development among states that were founded in the same year. Specifically, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Ekiti states were all established in 1996. However, the tweet pointed out that Ebonyi and Ekiti states have made more significant progress in terms of development compared to Bayelsa State.

This observation underscores the need for a closer examination of the development policies and strategies implemented by these states over the years, as well as the potential impact of FAAC disbursements on their progress.

Bayelsa’s Unique Identity

In a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner, Akin Akinwale commented on Bayelsa State’s laid-back reputation, stating that “the only thing we remember from the state is Goodluck Jonathan.” This remark highlights the need for Bayelsa to actively address its development challenges and work toward improving its image and infrastructure.
