Former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has officially resigned from his position in the House of Representatives in order to assume the role of Chief of Staff to the President.
PulseNets reports that the Speaker of the House read aloud Gbajabiamila’s letter of resignation during a session on the floor of the House.
As previously reported by this newspaper on Wednesday, it was anticipated that Gbajabiamila would resign to fully dedicate himself to the responsibilities awaiting him in the new government.
Concerns had arisen regarding how he would effectively handle both roles, considering that the former Speaker had just been inaugurated alongside his fellow lawmakers on Tuesday and had also participated in voting for the House leadership.
The Member representing Surulere 1 has now tendered his resignation, necessitating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacant position.
