IGP Announces New Date for Enforcement of Third-Party Vehicle Insurance

On Friday, January 10, 2025, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, declared a revised date for implementing the mandatory third-party vehicle insurance for motorists nationwide, PulseNets learnt.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, told PulseNets that the enforcement will now commence on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

In a post on X, Adejobi reported that the IGP made the announcement during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, and his team at the Force Headquarters.

Adejobi revealed that Omosehin was accompanied by Usman Jankara, the Deputy Commissioner (Technical and Financial Department), and Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon.

Other members of the NAICOM delegation included Talmiz Usman, Director (Legal, Enforcement, and Market Development); Ajibola Bankole, Director (Inspectorate); Taiwo Babatola Adeoye, Special Assistant to the Commissioner; and additional team members, PulseNets reported.

The NAICOM Commissioner commended the IGP for his commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country. He also highlighted the IGP’s significant accomplishments, particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited.

Adejobi quoted the Commissioner as saying, “He emphasized the need for the police’s assistance in ensuring public compliance with insurance laws. He also requested the Nigeria Police Force’s support in the nationwide enforcement of compulsory third-party insurance, which provides substantial benefits to all road users.”

In his remarks, the IGP reaffirmed the critical role of third-party insurance and reiterated that enforcement of the relevant laws would begin on February 1, 2025. “He emphasized the need for compliance and called on vehicle owners to ensure they possess valid third-party insurance before using public roads,” Adejobi told PulseNets.

The IGP further urged all motorists to act promptly and secure their third-party insurance policies ahead of the enforcement deadline.
