INEC Unveils New Electoral Guidelines for 2027 Elections, Announces CVR and Voter Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rolled out a revised framework to regulate the conduct of the 2027 general elections, as part of early institutional preparations for the nationwide polls.

The development was disclosed during a strategic engagement with political party leaders at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where top-level stakeholders convened to review the new electoral guidelines.

The meeting, PulseNets learned, brought together party chairmen, national secretaries, and other senior representatives across party lines. The session focused on unveiling and scrutinising updated regulations expected to shape electoral operations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Among those in attendance were key political figures, including Nenadi Usman, who represented the Labour Party. PulseNets also learnt that Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu were present on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

INEC, PulseNets reported, used the platform to justify the introduction of the updated rules, noting that the changes became necessary following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.

According to the INEC Chairman, political parties are expected to realign with the new legal provisions, as existing guidelines no longer meet the requirements of the amended law.

The revised guidelines, PulseNets gathered, will cover key areas such as operational procedures, compliance mechanisms, and standards for electoral conduct. The commission emphasised that strict adherence by all stakeholders is critical to achieving a transparent and credible election cycle.

As part of the roadmap to 2027, INEC also outlined plans for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. PulseNets obtained that online pre-registration is scheduled to commence on August 18, 2025, while in-person registration will begin on August 25, 2025, allowing eligible Nigerians to either register afresh or update their voter information.

Further disclosures indicate that the commission will undertake a nationwide revalidation of the voter register. PulseNets learnt that the exercise is designed to eliminate duplicate entries and remove records of deceased individuals, a move INEC considers essential for enhancing the integrity of the electoral database.

Meanwhile, electoral reform conversations continue to intensify, particularly around provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026. Attention, PulseNets reported, has been drawn to the National Assembly’s position on real-time electronic transmission of results to INEC’s Result Viewing portal, IReV.

Political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections are already taking shape. President Bola Tinubu has secured endorsement from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second-term ambition.

On the opposition front, PulseNets learnt that prominent figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi are exploring a coalition platform under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a bid to challenge the ruling party.
