Forbes Magazine announced on Friday, June 16, that South African billionaire Johann Rupert has surpassed Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote to become “Africa’s richest man”, ending Dangote’s 10-year streak holding that title.
According to Forbes’ real-time Global Billionaires Ranking, Rupert’s net worth is estimated at $12 billion, while Dangote’s stands at $10.8 billion. Dangote’s wealth took a significant hit due to the depreciation of the Nigerian Naira, resulting from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to auction the dollar at a lower rate than the official market price. The central bank sold the dollar at a nearly 30 percent discount.
