Jonathan Hails Babangida at 84, Calls His Hilltop Residence a “Mecca”
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the hilltop residence of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), as a “Mecca of sort” for Nigerians, attributing it to the retired general’s enduring leadership qualities.
PulseNets learnt that Jonathan spoke in Minna on Sunday when he led a delegation of well-wishers to pay homage to Babangida in honour of his 84th birthday.
The former Nigerian leader, while addressing journalists, told PulseNets that Babangida represents a rare kind of statesmanship rooted in unity and national interest.
“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the country.
That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sort. People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of IBB,” Jonathan said.

He further reported that Babangida never carried himself as a sectional leader but rather as one who believed firmly in the indivisibility of Nigeria.
According to him, the former military ruler remains a symbol of unity and will continue to be celebrated for his immense contributions to nation-building.
“Our prayer for him is for God to grant him a long life so that he can continue to mentor the younger ones to follow his exemplary footsteps,” Jonathan stated.
PulseNets gathered that the modest 84th birthday celebration in Minna featured prayers and the presentation of symbolic gifts from close friends, associates, and admirers.

The event, though low-key, reinforced Babangida’s standing as a revered elder statesman whose Minna residence continues to attract Nigerians seeking guidance, inspiration, and leadership counsel.
