BREAKING: Kaduna–Abuja Passenger Train Derails, Panic as Several Cabins Overturn

A major rail accident was learnt on Tuesday morning as a passenger train plying the busy Kaduna–Abuja route derailed, causing widespread panic and leaving an unconfirmed number of passengers injured.

According to details obtained by PulseNets, the train was en route from Kaduna to Abuja when multiple coaches skidded off the track. Several cabins reportedly overturned, forcing terrified passengers to scramble for safety in the midst of the chaos.

One eyewitness who spoke to PulseNets described the scene as “total confusion, with people screaming and trying to jump out of the cabins for survival.”

As at press time, officials have not confirmed whether there were fatalities. The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and security agencies are yet to issue any formal statement, although emergency responders were said to have arrived promptly at the crash site.

The exact cause of the derailment is still unknown. A source within the railway system told PulseNets that “investigators are already working to determine whether this was due to technical failure, vandalism, or sabotage.”

This Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor has long been plagued by tragic disruptions. PulseNets recalls that in March 2022, terrorists ambushed a train along this same route, killing several passengers and abducting dozens, an incident that shook national confidence in the railway system.

Experts who spoke to PulseNets noted that vandalism and scavenging of rail infrastructure have repeatedly undermined the safety of this corridor. Authorities have previously attributed frequent disruptions to such criminal activities, although no official link has been drawn in today’s case.

As of the time this report was filed, neither the NRC nor the Ministry of Transportation had issued a statement. Security operatives and rescue workers are however believed to be on ground managing the aftermath and ensuring that survivors are evacuated safely.

PulseNets learnt that a high-level probe is expected in the coming days, with many Nigerians demanding urgent answers and accountability to restore public confidence in one of the nation’s busiest rail routes.
