The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, or HURIWA, has urged Nigerian youths to guarantee that Asiawju Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, does not prevail in the general elections of 2023.
According to Emmanuel Onwubiko, the national coordinator of the rights organisation, who spoke with PulseNets on Wednesday, Tinubu was one of those who planned the Lekki massacre on October 20, 2020.
In October 2020, a countrywide demonstration was organised by young Nigerians who were outraged by the extrajudicial killings committed by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which has since been disbanded.
On October 20, 2022, Nigerian army soldiers allegedly opened fire on the unarmed demonstrators after storming the Lekki Tollgate, where the irate youngsters had gathered.
There is video evidence that numerous Nigerians were killed and hundreds of people suffered life-threatening injuries during the shooting incident, yet officials have yet to acknowledge this.
Onwubiko warned PulseNets that the victims might never receive justice if the APC flagbearer becomes President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 while commemorating the Nigerian youth on the second anniversary of the Lekki tragedy.
He said, “the youths are heroes. Nobody should have any regrets. They should not give up on the struggle for good governance. And as we move closer to elections, they should make sure that Tinubu does not smell the power.
“If somebody like Tinubu becomes Nigerian president, Lekki killings will be hidden forever”.
