The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has revealed that the telecommunications giant has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), seeking a 100 percent increase in service tariffs.

Toriola disclosed this during an exclusive interview with Arise TV on Thursday, PulseNets reported.

Despite the proposal, the CEO noted that the approval of such an increase remains uncertain due to the prevailing economic challenges in the country. Speaking on the matter, Toriola told PulseNets:

“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 percent tariff increases to regulators.
“I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country.”

This development arises amidst growing speculation about a potential hike in telecom service tariffs in Nigeria this year.

PulseNets learnt that the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, recently issued a warning that operations might shut down without an upward adjustment in tariffs.

However, telecom subscribers have voiced strong opposition to any plans for tariff increments.
