According to Gambo Aliyu, the Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), 1,619,133 Nigerians who are HIV positive are now receiving treatment.
In an interview with reporters on Thursday in Abuja, ahead of World AIDS Day, Aliyu noted that the number of treatment facilities in the nation has increased from 251 in 2017 to 2,262 in 2020.
“As at the end of September 2022 we have 1,619,133 persons on treatment, which represents a significant leap when compared to 838,020 persons in 2017.” he continued.
The Director General emphasised that new HIV infections gradually decreased from 103,404 in 2019 to 92,323 in 2021. According to the Director General, there was significant growth in key population treatment centres, rising from 10 in 2017 with a coverage of 16,147 to 118 in 2021 with a coverage of over 221,010.
The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day celebration, “Equalize to End AIDS: Equal Access to Treatment & Prevention Services,” according to Health Minister Osagie Ehanire, is intended to inspire renewed commitment to attaining epidemic control with the goal of eradicating AIDS by 2030.
Nigeria was getting closer to her goals, according to Akudo Ikpeazu, National Coordinator for the Ministry of Health’s National AIDS, STI, and Hepatitis Control Program.
