Obasanjo Backs PDP NWC, Warns Federal Government’s Direction Can’t Deliver National Progress

Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has praised the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by its National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, for what he described as deliberate efforts to stabilise and reposition the opposition party.

The former president spoke on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a consultative visit by members of the PDP NWC to his private residence, PulseNets learnt.

Obasanjo acknowledged the internal reforms and reconciliation steps so far undertaken by the party leadership, urging the committee to remain resolute and restore discipline within the PDP. According to him, party membership must be guided strictly by rules and internal order.

“Anyone who truly wants to belong to a political party must submit himself completely to its constitution, rules, and regulations,” Obasanjo stated.

Encouraging the NWC not to relent, the former president expressed optimism that the PDP’s current difficulties were surmountable if approached with sincerity and persistence.

“Nothing is beyond repair. Keep pushing forward. From what I can see, you are on the right path,” he said.

Obasanjo further stressed that democracy thrives on the presence of a credible, focused, and principled opposition, charging the PDP leadership to prioritise national interest above partisan considerations.

PulseNets obtained that he also shared candid views on Nigeria’s current political direction, warning that the country’s challenges require responsible engagement from all political actors.

“With the way the Federal Government is currently operating, Nigeria cannot be taken to a better place,” Obasanjo remarked, while offering his wealth of experience to support the party when needed.

He reaffirmed his readiness to provide counsel and guidance, noting that Nigeria’s present realities demand maturity, patriotism, and constructive political leadership.

Responding on behalf of the party leadership, PDP National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, expressed deep appreciation for the former president’s words of encouragement and continued mentorship.

“Your support and fatherly guidance mean a great deal to us. Your counsel has always been invaluable, and we will continue to draw from your wisdom as we work to rebuild, strengthen, and reunite our party,” Turaki told PulseNets.

He added that the visit was intentional and strategic.

“We came expressly to tap into your vast experience and gain insight into both the future of our party and the broader state of the nation,” he said.
