Abuja – Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday formally inaugurated its National Elective Convention Zoning Committee at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The 46-member high-powered committee is chaired by Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, with Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, serving as Vice Chairman, and Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, acting as Secretary.

In a statement made available to PulseNets by Mr. Daniel Alabrah, spokesman to Governor Diri, the Acting PDP National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, who performed the inauguration, stressed that the panel carried an onerous responsibility to reposition the PDP and make it stronger ahead of the 2025 National Convention.

According to Damagum, this inauguration marked the first strategic step towards the party’s convention, slated for November 2025, and he urged the committee to work with urgency and precision.

“Deploy wisdom, magnanimity, and experience to produce a robust formula for a successful convention,” Damagum told PulseNets, adding that the PDP was already racing against time.

Bala Mohammed: PDP Will Rescue Nigerians

Speaking during the event, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP Governors Forum, commended the choice of Diri and the committee members. He noted that they possessed the capacity, pedigree, and credibility to manage such a crucial assignment for the party’s future.

He reaffirmed that PDP governors are fully behind the National Working Committee (NWC) in its mission to present a credible political alternative to Nigerians.

“On behalf of all our governors in the PDP, I express appreciation to all members of our party from the wards to the national level for their sacrifice and contributions.

Our party has navigated so many booby-traps. We have travelled and covered the long distance, and this milestone is worth celebrating with humility and focus.

The governors are behind the National Working Committee and the desire to reposition our party for Nigerians to have a credible alternative. With experience and foresight, we are moving forward in the right direction,” Bala Mohammed told PulseNets.

He further stressed that the PDP’s legacy in Nigeria’s democratic journey remains unmatched, citing that most major achievements under democratic governance came during PDP administrations.

“The many years of the PDP administration have left fond memories and melancholy. Maybe the loss we have suffered will make us know our limitations and enable us do better.

I assure that our governors are behind this project of making Nigerians unified by bringing the right leadership that will make them happy,” he told PulseNets.

Responding on behalf of the committee, Governor Douye Diri described the assignment as a huge responsibility that would be handled with commitment, transparency, and fairness.

“We will be consultative. We will partner and be inclusive in arriving at a fair and just formula for our party. Thank you for finding us worthy to discharge this assignment, and we will do it to the best of our abilities,” Diri told PulseNets.
