Peter Obi Clinches NDC Presidential Ticket, Picks Kwankwaso as Running Mate for 2027 Election
Abuja — Former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has been officially adopted as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, PulseNets learnt.
Obi secured the party’s ticket unopposed after emerging as the sole aspirant in the NDC’s nationwide primary process. His candidature was subsequently ratified during a special national convention held in Abuja on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
In what political observers have described as a major development ahead of the next presidential contest, Obi unveiled former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister of Defence, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate and Vice Presidential Candidate for the 2027 election.
PulseNets reports that the convention drew delegates, stakeholders, and supporters from across the country. The event was presided over by the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, alongside the National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Zuwoghe.
Several party leaders, officials, and delegates representing different states were also present at the gathering.
The presidential flag of the Nigeria Democratic Congress was formally handed over to Peter Obi during a colourful ceremony witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, PulseNets learnt.
Speaking shortly after his adoption as the party’s standard bearer, Obi expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the NDC for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the party into the 2027 presidential election.
He also pledged to champion a campaign anchored on good governance, economic recovery, improved security, and national cohesion.

Political analysts believe the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket could reshape the opposition landscape ahead of 2027, combining Obi’s popularity among young Nigerians and his strong support base in the South-East with Kwankwaso’s established political structure and influence across Northern Nigeria.
The development is widely regarded as one of the most significant opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with expectations that the alliance could alter the dynamics of the race for Nigeria’s highest office.
