Port Harcourt Officially Crowned Nigeria’s Premier Energy City
Port Harcourt has officially obtained the title of “Nigeria’s Premier Energy City”, following an investiture ceremony organized by the Society of Energy Editors at the Government House in Rivers State.
The recognition, PulseNets reported, not only cements Port Harcourt’s unrivalled role in the country’s petroleum and gas economy but also sets the stage for its transformation into a continental leader in energy and industrial growth.
Representing the Administrator of Rivers State, His Excellency Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, told PulseNets that the administration remains fully committed to building an enabling environment for energy investors. According to him, the state is guaranteeing robust security, strict fiscal discipline, and investor-friendly policies that will make ventures in gas processing, crude refining, petrochemicals, and renewables both viable and profitable.
In his address, the Administrator declared:
“Port Harcourt is not just Nigeria’s energy heritage; it is the cradle of the nation’s industrial future. From the discovery of oil in Oloibiri to the building of refineries and petrochemical complexes, Rivers State has shouldered Nigeria’s prosperity. This investiture is a recognition of our past but, more importantly, a call to surpass it. Port Harcourt will not only remain Nigeria’s energy capital—it is destined to rise as Africa’s energy capital.”
Rivers State’s Five-Pillar Energy Agenda
PulseNets learnt that to consolidate this new designation, the Administrator unveiled a five-pillar strategy to reposition Port Harcourt on the global energy map:
-
Energy Diversification: Expanding into solar, wind, hydro, and other renewable energy sources alongside petroleum and natural gas.
-
Local Value Addition: Promoting deeper local content participation to ensure Rivers State indigenes benefit across every link of the energy value chain.
-
Infrastructure Development: Establishing Port Harcourt as a regional hub with world-class energy infrastructure, pipelines, and export terminals.
-
Environmental Stewardship: Protecting rivers, farmlands, and host communities to achieve sustainable energy growth.
-
Global Re-integration: Driving Port Harcourt’s re-entry into the World Energy Cities Programme (WECP) and launching an Annual International Energy Conference and Exhibition.
Strategic Partnerships and Investment Prospects
A major highlight of the event, PulseNets learnt, was the announcement of a forthcoming Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Rivers State Government and the Society of Energy Editors. According to the Society’s Chairman, Malam Yakubu Lawal, who spoke to PulseNets, the partnership is designed to attract international investors, strengthen Port Harcourt’s global reputation, and position the city alongside 15 other internationally recognized energy capitals.
Historical Context and Academic Insight
Delivering the keynote, the Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, provided a historical perspective on Port Harcourt’s energy journey since 1956. He stressed the importance of diversification into gas and renewables, urging stronger cooperation among stakeholders. Prof. Zeb-Obipi told PulseNets that energy journalism must remain balanced and that education reforms are essential to equip Nigerian youth with the skills needed for future energy innovation.
