PSC orders immediate retirement of all officers above 60

Just days after Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, stirred controversy over the extension of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the retirement of all officers above 60 years of age.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 31, the PSC announced that officers who have surpassed 35 years of service or are over 60 years should proceed with the retirement process.

PulseNets reported that Ikechukwu Ani, the spokesperson for the PSC, stated that the commission had reviewed its stance from the 24th plenary meeting held in September 2017.

Ani told PulseNets that the recommendations from the meeting permitted officers to use their enlistment dates rather than their initial appointment dates.

However, he noted, “The commission has passionately revisited their decision and has concluded that the said decision in its intent and purpose contradicted the principle of the merger of service in the public service and it violates Public Service Rule No 020908 (i & ii), which provides for retirement on attainment of 35 years in service or 60 years of age.”

He further disclosed that the directive had been formally communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
