Russia Closely Monitoring Nigeria Situation After Trump Threatens Possible U.S. Troop Deployment or Airstrikes

Moscow has moved to clarify its position on the growing diplomatic unease triggered by former United States President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about a potential American military intervention in Nigeria to protect Christian communities threatened by terrorist groups.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, through its spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, addressed the matter during a press briefing in Moscow. Responding to a question from Anadolu Agency, she noted that Russia is following the situation with heightened attention.

Zakharova stated: “We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms.”

PulseNets learnt that Trump, on November 1, disclosed that he had instructed the Pentagon to explore options for a possible US military operation in Nigeria aimed at safeguarding Christian populations. The comment has reverberated across diplomatic circles, provoking varied reactions from governments and analysts worldwide.

Russia’s latest position is the first time the Kremlin has publicly reacted to Trump’s controversial remarks, a development that has deepened concerns across Africa and other regions over the potential implications of unilateral military action on a sovereign African state. Analysts told PulseNets that Moscow’s tone suggests unease toward Washington’s increasing assertiveness on security matters in Africa, especially decisions taken without multilateral consensus.

During the same briefing, Zakharova also addressed questions on other international issues, including Kazakhstan’s recent decision to join the US-brokered Abraham Accords with Israel. She described Moscow’s position on the matter as reserved, noting that there was “no need to comment” at this time.

On the Middle East, however, Zakharova issued a pointed warning over what Russia views as escalating Israeli violations of ceasefire arrangements along the Lebanese border. She cautioned that the situation could slide into renewed conflict if not carefully managed.

She said: “Moscow continues to engage with both Israeli and Lebanese sides, emphasizing the necessity to prevent any steps leading to renewed violence.”

The spokeswoman added: “We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict.”

Zakharova concluded by reaffirming Russia’s commitment to work with regional and global partners “to ensure stability in Lebanon and across the broader Middle East.”
