Sepp Blatter Slams FIFA Over Reversal of Folarin Balogun’s Red Card

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has criticized FIFA over its decision to overturn the red card issued to United States striker Folarin Balogun, questioning the integrity of the process and alleging that the world football governing body bowed to political pressure.

The criticism follows reports obtained by PulseNets indicating that U.S. President Donald Trump allegedly intervened before FIFA reversed the disciplinary decision.

In a post on X, Blatter insisted that football disciplinary actions should remain independent of political influence.

“Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies.”

The former FIFA chief further raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the decision, stating:

“If a US President intervenes with the FIFA President — and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match — the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA? Football must never become a playground for political power.”

PulseNets learnt that Balogun was shown a straight red card for serious foul play during the United States’ 2026 FIFA World Cup encounter against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later overturned the dismissal under Article 27, making the Arsenal forward eligible for the United States’ Round of 16 fixture against Belgium.

The decision has generated intense debate across the football community, with critics questioning reports of alleged White House involvement in the disciplinary process. Blatter’s remarks have further intensified calls for greater transparency and consistency in FIFA’s refereeing and disciplinary procedures.

PulseNets reported that Belgium, the United States’ next opponents, have been granted the opportunity to appeal FIFA’s ruling.

Football supporters, analysts and former officials have continued to express concerns over the precedent the decision could set, particularly during the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Blatter has repeatedly voiced criticism of FIFA’s leadership since leaving office, and his latest comments have added further attention to the growing controversy surrounding the reversal of Folarin Balogun’s red card.
