Ugandan court has ordered a lady to pay her ex-fiance for breach of marriage promises

A Ugandan court ordered a woman to pay her ex-fiance 9.4 million shillings ($2,550; £2,060) in restitution for not getting married to him after four years of dating.

According to the ruling made on Thursday by Magistrate Asanasio Mukobi of the court in Kanungu, Fortunate Kyarikunda had broken her promise to Richard Tumwine.

According to Mukobi, Tumwine used the money to cover Kyarikunda’s legal and educational costs as restitution for his psychological suffering.

Kyarikunda had stated that her parents had objected to the union because Tumwine was older than she was.

The defendant’s claim that her parents advised her against marrying an older man was rejected by the court, which ruled that it was “unreasonable, a misrepresentation, and a fraud.”

The magistrate said she “had all the opportunity to reject the plaintiff’s love requests at the earliest point possible and avoid interfering with his financial obligations.”

However, according to reports, it is uncertain whether Kyarikunda would challenge the decision because the ruling was erroneous because, unlike marriage, an engagement should not be legally binding.
