US Congress Condemns Kaduna Church Abductions, Warns Against Continued Persecution of Christians in Nigeria

Security concerns have once again drawn international attention after the abduction of scores of Christian worshippers from churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, an incident that has now prompted a reaction from the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

PulseNets learnt that the House Committee, reacting via a post on X, echoed former US President Donald Trump’s long-standing position that Washington would not remain silent amid what it described as the sustained persecution and killing of Christians in Nigeria by Islamist terrorist groups.

In its statement, obtained by PulseNets, the committee stressed that repeated attacks and mass kidnappings attributed to terrorists operating in northern Nigeria were unacceptable and would not be ignored.

The committee stated: “Over the weekend, Islamist terrorists in Nigeria stormed churches and abducted well over 160 Christian worshippers.”
It added: “President Trump has been unequivocal. The United States cannot look away while these crimes continue in Nigeria. The slaughter and targeting of innocent Christians is something America will not tolerate.”

PulseNets reported that Trump, during his time in office, repeatedly issued proclamations condemning the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, framing the issue as one of religious freedom and global human rights.

Following Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern, the US government, on December 26, carried out an air operation targeting suspected terrorist hideouts in Sokoto State. Developments obtained by PulseNets indicate that the strike was aimed at weakening insurgent networks believed to be responsible for attacks on civilian and religious targets.

However, weeks after the airstrike, terrorists reportedly launched a coordinated raid in Kajuru, Kaduna State. PulseNets learnt that on January 18, gunmen attacked two churches—Cherubim and Seraphim Church 1 and Cherubim and Seraphim Church 2—located in Kurmin Wali community, abducting worshippers during church activities.

Sources who spoke to PulseNets disclosed that although about 177 people were initially taken during the attack, 11 of the abducted victims later escaped from captivity, leaving 166 persons—including women and children—still in the hands of the kidnappers.

PulseNets gathered that both the Kaduna State Government and the Nigeria Police Force have officially confirmed the mass abduction. Meanwhile, the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the North told PulseNets it is demanding urgent and decisive action to secure the immediate rescue of the remaining captives.
